'where did the name 'chilsung-ro' originated from?'
Chilsung-ro is the site of medieval, modern and today's history.
The seven star symbols and the name 'chilsung-ro' all came from the 'chilsung-dan' from the old Tamra era.
Chilsung-ro is the street where visitors could take a glimpse of the historically lively Jeju, from the Chosun dynasty,
traditional Jeju-eup and the modern Jeju-si, and to today's special self-governing province.
When was 'chilsung-ro' originated?
When it comes to Jeju's shopping area, Chilsung-ro is still the
representative street. Modern shopping areas have been built since
the Japanese colonial era, and so notable shops were all set at Chilsung-ro and it has become the central shopping area of Jeju,
thus it was the 'original shopping place' of Jeju. Jeju's commercial rights was also centered in this area. In the old times,
the streets were Japanese and the names were also Japanese until the
60s. The names 'Honmachi', Chilsung-tong, Wonjung-tong, Nammun-tong, Seomun-tong, Dongmun-tong etc. all changed after 1960, when -tong changed into -ro.
Shops at Chilsung-tong in the 1960s and the Japanese colonial era
During the Japanese colonial era, main shops were considered comprehensive shops where miscellaneous
and. stationery items were sold. Of course, specialty shops of Jewelry and watches also exist which originated from Japanese stores.
These shops maintain the traditions of the old Chilsung-ro. The core of the Chilsung-tong shopping center,
however, has always been the clothes shop. It was in the mid 1950s when couture shops first appeared,
and people from the castle had their own suits and two-pieces made. The Mindle shop, Norano shop and Hani courture shops of the 1970s were all famous places.
The Shinhwa couture shop was a well-known place for events such as weddings, and for wedding gifts(either couture dresses or traditional Hanbok).
After the liberation and 6.25 war, and even until the year 1955, some public workers received suits instead of their monthly salary through Hanyang shop(general store).
Men usually used the Chilsung-tong Bongrasa or the Dongha couture shop. Famous and notable shops are continuously extending its' glorious fame these days, all densely located together at the shopping street.
